Industrial UPS: ensuring processes without interruptions or losses

27 May, 2024

Backup solutions through uninterruptible power supply systems or industrial UPS help companies keep their production processes online 24/7 and protect valuable installed infrastructure.

In fact, voltage fluctuations from the local power grid generate high costs and unproductivity, as was the case with the Mexican company Viakon.

Find out how they solved it thanks to Grupo Industronic.

Installing industrial UPS reduces losses and increases availability

Viakon, with 36 production lines in the power transmission area, was recording significant losses due to constant power interruptions caused by poor infrastructure in the area.

On the one hand, they recorded 20 disturbances per month at the plant, although these interruptions could increase depending on other external variables.

In total, there were 200 hours of downtime per year; and when the uninterruptible power systems were installed, the company reduced the problem by more than 70%.

In addition, the time lost in production was offset by extra personnel, among other measures, which increased process costs. Added to this was the deterioration of the equipment.

“If the equipment does not have clean energy, with a power factor as it should be, its useful life is weakened,” said Julio Lara, Maintenance Manager at Viakon.

In this case, it was essential to have quality power to create a production plan, which is why they turned to Grupo Industronic.

What was the customized solution?

The team of experts at Grupo Industronic determined that uninterruptible UPS systems should be installed to counteract the unproductivity caused by power disturbances. In this case, they opted for high-capacity equipment to protect their production lines.

“This increased equipment availability and reduced repairs and service outages, which were the corrective measures for the power outages,” said engineer Lara.

As a result, the 200 hours of downtime were reduced to 130, eliminating 60 hours of inactivity, “which saved money and provided a faster return on investment than expected.”

Finally, they found a maintenance policy at Industronic that provides them with advice and after-sales service whenever a fault occurs.

Understanding the needs and diagnosing the quality of power in the industrial environment allows us to know what type of UPS is required, its type and capacity, as well as the specific benefits of this technology that help provide competitive advantages.
